Masters of Their Conditions* is an archival installation representing more than twenty years of cross-disciplinary dialogue between an American visual artist (Gilbert) and a Swiss transcultural psychiatrist/anthropologist (Arpin). Through multimedia narration, the pair explores cultural identity, loss, memory and ritual. “We have collaborated on research, lectures, projects and workshops regarding migration and health, AIDS, cancer (both being survivors) and recently …post-Katrina New Orleans,” the artists write. “This iteration of our work together will be interactive and include drawings, mixed media artwork, text, video, websites, photography and dialogues/presentations.” *The title of this archive derives from the name of a series of publications by Dr. Jacques Arpin. This project is sponsored in part through the generous support of the Louisiana Cultural Economic Foundation, Newcomb College Center for Research on Women and the Contemporary Arts Center residency of The VESTIGES Project.
