Shan Goshorn is an Eastern Band Cherokee Indian artist who specializes in
hand-tinted
black and white photography. Much of her artwork and lectures address the
racism and
stereotypes of Indian people in commercial products, most notably the use
of Indians as
sport mascots. Her work has been exhibited internationally including the Franco-American
Institute (Rennes, France), American Indian Community House Gallery (New York
City) and
International Arts Alive Festival (Johannesburg, Africa).
About the tile:
“I used this very ancient symbol found in our people’s burial
mounds. It is understood to illustrate the way
that we measure time. Rather than a timeline, we use the spiral to show the
overlapping relationships
between all generations. May it also symbolize the peaceful relationships
between all people.”
