Rania Jawad is a doctoral student in Literatures at New York University.
Her focus lies in the relationships between literature, society, and the
political context, especially in the Arabic language and literatures of
the Middle East. Her visual work develops these issues through figurative
and abstract images taken from direct observation and then manipulated.
About the tile:
The tiles made specifically for this project incorporate a figurative
image taken directly from a newspaper article. The words found below the
photograph read: "Cambodian girls searched through mounds of garbage
. . .
looking for discarded items to recycle or sell."
