Mary Sherman makes “paintings” that are modular and often incorporate
the use of sound
and motion. She is very interested in how sites and their context inform an
artwork and vice
versa, leading her to found TransCultural Exchange and, this year, organize
“The Tile Project,
Destination: The World.” Her works have been widely exhibited, including
at New York City’s
Trans Hudson Gallery, Chicago’s Oskar Friedl Gallery, Seoul’s
Kwanhoon Art Gallery,
Venice’s Instituto Universitario d’Architettura di Venezia, the
Boston Center for the Arts, and
Vienna’s WUK Kunsthalle. Last year she was awarded a residency at M.I.T.
and this year, a
residency at the Pilchuck Glass School.
About the tile:
The tiles are fused glass, made during the residency at Pilchuck with technical
assistance
from Beth Richardson. Each is unique.
