Ginny Sykes was raised in Washington DC in the 1960’s and is a product
of the civil rights
movement, the free speech movement and general anti-war activism during
the Vietnam War.
As a result, some of her art work reflects these concerns. She has participated
in both solo
and group exhibitions, including Daughters, a traveling exhibition with
the Midwest Chapter of the
Women’s Caucus of Art. Her public art works include collaborations
with the Chicago Department of
Transportation and the Chicago Public Art Group. In 1999, she received an
Illinois Percent for Art Award
and an Honor Award from The American Society of Landscape Architects
About the tile:
Sykes hopes these tiles to be a plea to her ethics and ideals during these
difficult times.
Sykes says, “in the words of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, let’s
give peace a chance.”
