About the tile:
This series of tiles that I am submitting for The Tile Project is done with
the use of
Pebeo porcelain paint over the reverse side of commercially available 10 x
10cm tiles. I
fired the tiles again so that the porcelain paint would adhere to the rough
clay surfaces so
that they would be resistant to outdoor conditions. The figures painted on
the tiles
(which I cut out from Spanish newspapers) represent anonymous people who live
in
Spain. The words found on some of the tiles are the markings made originally
by the
vendors of the tile. The whole theme centers on identity and anonymity: In
making these
tiles I was inspired by the graffiti that I see on walls and on different
surfaces--especially
the ones stenciled on the brick walls of most of Spain’s buildings.
